In layman’s terms, smelting refers to the process of extracting a base metal from its ore and removing impurities, leaving only the base metal behind.
If you take your gold, karat, jewelry and send it to a smelter, you’ll have the option to either get back pure gold, less an amount of gold equal to the fee or get a check based on the spot price of gold when it was smelted minus the fee.
The cost for this service runs between 5% and 10% of the spot value of the gold that you have smelted with them.
The process it’s fairly simple. They send you a package to put the gold in. You pack it up and mail it to them. They smelt it and send you a check.
